Biography
Joy Richardson
Joy was born in Guyana and grew up in London. She takes her inspiration from her experiences of childhood in Guyana and the U.K. The contrasting environments and cultures led her to question how the daily rituals of life can inform identity, contributing to feelings of belonging, alienation, or an overlapping of both.
The context in which these rituals are performed have a deep impact on our feelings of safety, of finding our place in the world. Individual and group identity. Themes of community, individuality, war and peace are explored. But what does identity mean if you are a child and also a soldier?
By applying unmixed colours onto each previously dried layer of paint, a luminosity, and transparency is brought to the paintings, reflecting the accumulated layers that builds our identity
