Biography

Joy Richardson is a professional artist. Born in Guyana, she came to England at the age of three and grew up in London. Joy takes her inspiration from her experiences of childhood in Guyana and the U.K. The contrasting environments and cultures led her to question how the daily rituals of life can inform identity, contributing to feelings of belonging or alienation. Joy uses oil paints on canvas. Unmixed colours are applied onto each dried layer of paint to create a luminosity and transparency to her paintings, reflecting the multitude of influences that informs individuality and identity. Joy lives in London and painted for many years at Great Western Studios. Joy now works from home, in Hackney.
